The board is aiming to hold the community celebration on on Saturday, Oct. 5, the day before the opening.

The ice surface will turn the arena into a twin-plex, with the original rink having opened for the season Sept. 3.

A couple of local Leaside hockey organizations will waste no time using the much needed extra ice surface.

In fact, the Leaside Wildcats intermediate AA women’s team, which plays in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League – the top league in the province for junior-aged women – have a home game scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6, 3:30 p.m. against Mississauga.

The team, which will play earlier home games at Angela James and Mattamy arenas, will then play the bulk of their games at Leaside arena.

While the arena board is promising the ice will be good and the building will be clean and safe some work will remain.

“Please be aware that furnishings and amenities will not be 100 per cent complete by that time,” stated White in his update. “For example, we anticipate that items such as painting, signage and landscaping will not be completed until later in the fall.

“Please bear this in mind during the early days – we ask for your continued understanding and co-operation as we work together to complete the project.”

He also advised that “the swimming pool, which had been closed for repairs, is also back in business.
