Scarborough subway: Metrolinx leaves route decision to the city

scarborough-rt-platform-600x443Toronto will gain $1.48 billion in provincial funding for a Scarborough subway to Sheppard Ave. East, regardless of the route it approves.

In a letter to the city, Metrolinx said its only condition for the funding is that the environmental assessment for the subway includes consideration of all potential routes.

That would include Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray’s proposal for an above-ground route that follows the Scarborough RT alignment, as well as an underground,three-stop subway along McCowan, approved by city council in July.

There are pros and cons to each, and both would probably require refinements, Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig said.
